Creation of user interface and user experience for interactive displays

The Challenge

The cooperative Abacus, dedicated to the sale of cultural and educational material, with stores in Catalonia, Valencia and Balearic Islands, entrusted Profile with the mission of achieving a good shopping experience for their customers at the point of sale.

With a demanding deadline, we had to design a interface for touch displays, that served to offer information about the products, identify products in stock, locate them in the nearest store in case of unavailability and also to check accumulated point to get discounts.

Our Solution

After the first meetings with the stakeholders, where we aligned our visions in order to find an interactive solution that met client’s needs, in Profile we started with the field research. We focused on the use of the displays at different points of sale, trying to find patterns to apply in the prototypes.

While the UX team worked on the conceptualization, another team studied the best choice for the creation of the interface user, concluding that using Bootstrap was the solution that best suited, since the internal management application of Abacus, made in Java, used a framework that allowed the use of the library of this grid system.

With the first medium-fidelity prototypes approved, we began to carry out tests with users to validate the hypothesis of the first research. We rejected some of them, polish others and went back to work on them, approaching the solution.

Once we were satisfied with the tests, we could take charge of the visual layer of the application. We gave special attention to the user interface (UI). As it a high visibility element at the point of sale, we treated it, not only as an interactive showcase, but also as another tool to communicate the spirit of Abacus and reinforce the character of the brand.

Collaboration between Profile and Abacus development team was crucial for the implementation of the interface with their manager system, in order to accomplish the deadline with a fully functional display.
